Epic Environmental Activism & legislation!
Under Construction
I wasn’t allowed to swim in the Hudson, the Potomac, or the Charles Rivers, ... I remember dusting our home daily for soot from the black smoke that billowed from stacks around Washington, DC. I was aware that thousands of Americans died each year during smog events. I never saw herons, ospreys, and bald eagles. Pesticides had mostly extinguished their mid-Atlantic populations and were doing the same to our songbirds
- Bobby, quoted in The Real RFK Jr., p. 23-24
My father was furious that state officials weren’t doing anything about it. Soon after his selection, he made a trip up the Hudson to inspect the pollution. Dead for twenty-mile stretches north of New York City and south of Albany, the river caught fire regularly and turned whatever color they were currently painting trucks at the GM plant in Tarrytown.
- Bobby, The Real RFK Jr., p. 27
Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has been a prominent environmental advocate, engaging in various initiatives to protect natural resources and combat pollution.
Throughout his career, Kennedy has emphasized the importance of environmental protection as a fundamental civil rights issue, stating, "The environment is the most important, the most fundamental, civil-rights issue.... Four out of every five toxic-waste dumps in America is in a black neighborhood."
His work has often involved legal action against polluting corporations, reflecting his commitment to holding them accountable for environmental degradation.
"I think he has the potential to be a great political leader. If he were, he'd also be a great leader when it comes to values. He's enormously attractive to a lot of people who care about the future of the planet, and people all across America talk to me about wanting to support him if he does run for office..."
- John Adams, Natural Resource Defense Council (NRDC)'s President as quoted on page 189 of The Real RFK Jr. by Dick Russel
"We still have time to preserve a planet for our children that provides at least some of the opportunities for dignity and enrichment as those our parents gave us. My job is to be able to look myself in the mirror and say that I spent my short time on this planet trying to make it a better place fr my children. I have to look my children in the eye and I will be able to do that. Because I know I will never sell out, and I’m going to spend my life fighting as hard as I can. I will die with my boots on. That’s really all I care about.”
- RFK Jr. In a talk with author Dick Russel in a 2002 visit, as quoted on page 189-190 of The Real RFK Jr. by Dick Russel
